National Geographic,
When Death Doesn’t Mean Goodbye

In Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, the Torajan people believe life doesn’t end when their heart stops beating. They are considered “sick” and kept in the family’s home for weeks to years, being loved and cared for, until the day comes when their family sacrifices a water buffalo or many water buffalo, in the person’s honor, to act as a vehicle to the afterlife.

This film was created for National Geographic with additional support from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
